Interpreting "The Kraken"
Kraken. An enormous mythical sea monster from Scandinavia. “The Kraken,” a poem, written by Tennyson is a metaphorical portrayal of the monster that lies within everyone. “Far, far beneath in the abysmal sea/ His ancient, dreamless, uninvaded sleep/ The Kraken sleepeth” (2-4). There has always been a legend about the fearsome Kraken that lives in the depths of the ocean and attacks ships and humanity. However in the poem by Tennyson, the Kraken is depicted as a sleeping grudge within all of us that hides until something triggers it to surface; and when it awakens and rises out of us, it dies.
“Then once by man and angels to be seen/In roaring he shall rise and on the surface die” (14-15). But, the monster within can either rise to the surface and die peacefully, meaning the fear causing the grudge is faced; or the monster die a violent death causing pain to others and even more pain within, the death of the inner kraken is a choice.
Are monsters created or discovered? Essential Question
Monsters are initially created within someone or something due to a traumatic experience. However, these monsters are typically pushed down until they go into hibernation and one day wake up. Therefore, as the monster wakes, it is rediscovered and must be faced and defeated or it will take over. Thus, monsters are first created and then discovered, according to the poem, “The Kraken” by Tennyson.
